NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The price of the world's most popular prescription medication, AstraZeneca's Nexium, has dropped sharply since its patent expired in July, but the company still supplies some of the world's most popular generic drugs for more than a decade.
"That's really a big shock," said Dr. Scott Oleson, director of the Office of Generic Drugs at the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) in Washington. "I mean, we've never had a generic drug for a reason."
The generic-drug market is split in half over two main categories of drugs: branded drugs and generics.
Most generics have generic names, but some generics are more expensive than the brand name drug.
One of the major reasons for this is the cost of producing and marketing generics, Oleson said.
He added that his company has seen a 50 percent drop in the prices for generics compared to the previous two months, with a 10 percent drop in the same period.
In addition, he said, "We've also had a lot of consolidation, so that's where it's at."
Oleson said generics can now be made at a lower price point than branded drugs, which is why he's been looking for generics since they were introduced in late 2003 and early 2004.
Oleson said Nexium is also available at a lower cost compared to other branded drugs. The only difference is the name of the generic drug, which is used to treat chronic conditions and is often available generically.
For example, Pfizer's Nexium and Pfizer's Zegerid, another generic, are often sold at a cheaper price than other drugs.
In addition, the price difference for the generic version of Nexium is so significant that it may only be sold under the brand name, rather than in the generic version, which is a much more expensive form.
Oleson added that the company has a special discount program for consumers, which may allow it to lower the price of some generic drugs at a discount that may be available at lower prices than in the branded drug market.
"We also have a program that offers some generic drug discounts for patients who may be able to afford a lower price point on a generic," Oleson said.
Oleson said Nexium is still the best option for those who may need the medication.
Dr. Steven R. Redlaski, who treats gastroesophageal reflux disease and chronic conditions and is currently the chief medical officer of AstraZeneca, said he was unaware of any generic drug discount programs.
"We have no idea at this point in time what the discount program will be or how much we'll have to spend," he said.
The most popular prescription drug for the first year and a half, Nexium was $6.39 for a 20-day supply, according to FDA data. The second year was $5.60 for a 20-day supply, and the third year was $6.60.
Oleson said he did not know the price of Nexium for the second year and that the drug was only available on prescription, so it would not be the first time a generic has been made.
"I think that's a very, very interesting point," Oleson said.
The FDA is responsible for the analysis and management of all drugs, but he said that when the FDA does make a decision, it must be based on clinical studies, the company's own data and, most importantly, the information that the company provides to consumers.
In addition to Nexium and Zegerid, the FDA also carries some generic drugs, but those drugs must be approved by the FDA before any drugs can be made available on the market. In some cases, generics may not be approved until after the expiration of the patents.
Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Bristol-Myers Squibb all are big drug manufacturers, with Pfizer being one of the largest.
In its latest update, Pfizer said it had saved the company $5.3 billion since its patent expired.
The company also said it has saved the company $3.3 billion on research and development.
What is Reflux?
Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Do I get instant relief from taking a Nexium tablet?
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
How much to take• The recommended dose is one tablet a day. • Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don’t feel an improvement immediately. • You may need to take the tablets for 2 or 3 days in a row before your reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation) get better. • The treatment length is up to 14 days. • When your reflux symptoms have completely gone you should stop taking this medicine. • If your reflux symptoms get worse or do not improve after taking this medicine for 14 days in a row, you should consult a doctor. If you have persistent or longstanding, frequently recurring symptoms even after treatment with this medicine, you should contact your doctor. Taking this medicine • You can take your tablet at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach. • Swallow your tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet contains coated pellets, which stop the medicine from being broken down by the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.
Alternative method of taking this medicine• Put the tablet in a glass of still (non-fizzy) water. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Always stir the mixture just before drinking it. • To make sure that you have drunk all of the medicine, rinse the glass very well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid pieces contain the medicine – do not chew or crush them
